Fenwick is a small village 4 miles north of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland.  Originally three small hamlets of High Fenwick, Laugh (low) Fenwick and Kirkton,  they became known as  the village of Fenwick as each of the hamlets grew and merged.    The 2001 Census had the population at 863 but this had increased to 988 in 2005 (last offical estimate).

In the heart of the village is Fenwick Parish Church which was built in 1643.   In 1929 the roof and some of the interior was destroyed by fire.    When the new roof was completed it was noted that the roofer, while slating the roof, had incorporated a Latin Cross by way of darker tiles surrounded by lighter tiles on the east roof of the south transept which infuriated the Minister of the time.   If you look at the photograph very closely you can just make out the cross below and slightly left of the small spire.   There is a smaller cross incorporated elsewhere on the roof which was a "trial run" and is much more difficult to spot!

In the past Fenwick relied on shoemaking, weaving and farming and was the birthplace of the very first Co-operative Society. The Fenwick Weavers Society was established in 1761 thus being  83 years before Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

Fenwick was the birthplace of John Walker in 1805.   John Walker was the founder of the world renowned Johnnie Walker Whisky which is still produced in nearby Kilmarnock where Johnnie had his shop.

Fenwick was also the birthplace of John Fulton in 1800.    John Fulton made an orrery (a mechanical model of the solar system).   The Fulton's Orrery, built in 1833, is now on display in the Kelvingrove Musem in Glasgow.

Fenwick Brownies have been in existence since at least 1931 although they were officially registered  with the Scottish Headquarters of the Girl Guide Association on 24th February 1937 and have been continuously active since then making us one of the oldest units in the County.   Fenwick also has a thriving Rainbow Unit and a Guides Unit.  We all look forward to continuing for many years to come!
